What Is It?
DATABANK is a hospital monthly reporting system developed by the Colorado Hospital Association (CHA) in 1985. The program was designed to provide CHA member hospitals access to timely, accurate and complete information on the comparative performance of hospitals in their state.
The core of DATABANK is a web-based database of hospital utilization and financial performance indicators. The database is a source of comparable information on inpatient and outpatient utilization, charges and expenses per day and per stay, uncollected charges, number of days in accounts receivable gross, profitability and a number of personnel statistics.
DATABANK's success in Colorado led to the adoption of the DATABANK program by other state hospital associations. Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems (OAHHS) began using DATABANK in 1993, under a licensing agreement with CHA. OAHHS' subsequent development of the Oregon DATABANK Program has afforded hospitals a convenient, cost-effective and efficient mechanism for reporting their monthly data to the state while also providing powerful analytical tools in the form of custom reports that can be used to compare individual hospitals to their peers throughout Oregon.
Hospital staff submits their monthly data on the secure DATABANK web site in a process that usually takes less than one hour. Click here for a sample DATABANK Input Form. Once data is entered on the online forms hospitals are able to run a variety of reports to check the accuracy of all submitted data. Other reports containing hospital-to-hospital or hospital to peer group comparisons can be generated once certain peer group thresholds have been met. Information contained in the DATABANK reports can be used for budgeting, marketing and internal management purposes within the hospital.
Around the United States
CHA's DATABANK program is now being licensed in twenty seven states around the country. These states operate their DATABANK programs in much the same way as CHA, but have the ability to customize their programs to meet their specific needs. For instance, some states report on a quarterly basis instead of monthly. There are also some optional fields and modules that states can choose to use or not use. State associations also have control over what thresholds must be met in order for data to display on a report. Hospitals can include data from other states in their reports by utilizing the National Peer Group Builder.

Access
Access to www.databank.org is limited to participating hospitals. Each hospital assigns a DATABANK Contact Person who is responsible for submitting the hospital's data each month. The DATABANK Contact Person can also control access to the DATABANK web site by other hospital personnel by creating additional login accounts. Levels of access for individual users can be controlled so that security can be maintained by limiting access to the online input forms and management features. Access can also be provided at the system level so that hospital system personnel can view data for all their facilities with one login account.
