PURPLE Crying Program Expands in Oregon

Lake Oswego, Ore. (July 6, 2009) ---  The Children's Trust Fund of Oregon (CTFO) recently announced two grants to fund The Period of PURPLE Crying for hospitals within Asante Health System in Medford, Oregon and Salem Hospital in Salem, Oregon.  The grants will be awarded for two-years, beginning July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2011 and renewable after that time subject to the availability of funds.

"These new funds could not have come at a better time given the tremendous sacrifices we are all making in this challenging economy," stated Sandy Nipper, RN, Period of PURPLE Crying expert and Child Safety Program Coordinator at Legacy Health.  "New birth parents need to understand the six characteristics of normal newborn crying, represented by the acronym PURPLE, are expected and there are appropriate coping mechanisms for everyone involved with the newborn care to prevent injury. This grant will help us transition parents to the realities of caring for a newborn and ease some of the stress and anxiety that may accompany prolonged newborn crying," continued Nipper.

The funds will be used to establish The Period of PURPLE Crying education program for new parents, which includes a full color 11-page booklet and a 10-minute DVD intended to be sent home with new birth parents.   More information on the PURPLE program can be found online at the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome at www.dontshake.org

Diane Waldo, OAHHS director of quality and clinical services commented, "For Oregon, this is a young initiative that is gaining momentum with our hospitals throughout the state. Hospitals are looking for funding to help with implementation because they believe in the value of this proven, evidence-based program for their community. These grants from the CTFO will help tremendously. OAHHS remains committed to facilitate and support this work with Oregon hospitals. "

About CTFO: The mission of the Children's Trust Fund of Oregon Foundation (CTFO) is to support the establishment of community-based direct service programs designed to provide universal prevention programs which reduce the incidence of child abuse and neglect and promote healthy, safe families. We prefer grants for programs or program components which help children by targeting increased caretaker skills and child development knowledge rather than direct services which target children as clients.  For more information visit www.ctfo.org.
