Oregon Psychiatric Inpatient Committee (OPIC)

OPIC Contacts

OAHHS formed a workgroup in 2001 to look at the issue of inpatient acute mental health care in our state.  The Oregon Psychiatric Inpatient Committee (OPIC) is comprised of clinical and administrative representatives from the acute care psychiatric facilities and programs in the state of Oregon.  The member hospitals represented:

  • Adventist Medical Center
  • Bay Area Hospital
  • Good Samaritan Medical Center, Corvallis
  • Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center
  • Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center
  • Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital & Medical Center
  • Oregon Health & Sciences University Hospital
  • Providence Portland Medical Center
  • Providence St. Vincent Medical Center
  • Rogue Valley Medical Center
  • Sacred Heart Medical Center
  • Salem Hospital
  • St. Charles Medical Center, Bend
  • Tuality Healthcare

Background:

OPIC was created in response to the over-crowding and wait-lists at the Oregon State Hospital, and the inability of the state to resolve the issue or compensate the hospitals for the services provided. We saw the need to work together to resolve these issues, as our collective expertise and experience could be used to provide better mental health services for all citizens in Oregon. Members of this committee volunteer their time in an effort to effect needed change in the mental health system of care in Oregon.  The current purpose of our committee includes evaluating the structure and delivery of acute care services in the State of Oregon as well as coordinating best practices in the delivery of these services while always focusing on the safety and well-being of the patients we serve.
